In late July 2026, US Attorney for DC Jeanine Pirro dropped vandalism charges against four people accused of damaging the renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, after her office determined the damage stemmed from faulty contractor installation, not vandalism, contradicting Trump's public claims about the $16 million renovation. Trump publicly said Pirro "choked," summoned her to the White House, but did not fire her. On August 5, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, asked directly whether Trump could fire Pirro over the decision, said "he's allowed to do that, because he's the president of the United States," declining to defend her prosecutorial independence.
